Becoming an Early Riser part 2

Project recap: My goal is to become and early riser, specifically to wake up at 5:30 every day. I am doing this because there is a very high correlation between waking up early and being successful. I was inspired to do this because of Steve Pavalina's series of posts on becoming an early riser.

The first few days of my project were quite possibly a failure by all standards. The first day, I thought ht alarm was set for earlier, but Brenton had reset it for later. I woke up at about 7 o'clock, but I snuggled in bed for 30 minutes. As nice as it was, I'm not sure it's quite the path to success that I am looking for. I did manage to wake up at 7 and get moving for the next two days, but then the weekend hit.

Saturday was...well a Saturday, and we all know that Saturday's are made for sleeping in. A key component to becoming an early riser is to develop the cycles in your body. In order to do this, you have to wake up at the same time every day. This will take some discipline.

Sunday I had a good excuse. I woke up with a monster migraine headache. Anybody who has ever had a migraine knows that the best thing to do is to lay in a dark, quiet room and sleep. Of course I didn't know I had a migraine until I woke up sometime after 8 o'clock.

I started the week with renewed vigor for my goal. I am going to do this. I think that one of the reasons why there is a correlation between success and being an early riser is probably because both take self discipline. In my heart, I would like to think that success comes easy, but I know that it requires work. Sticking to work when you don't see any fast results requires self discipline.

I have woken up at 6 o'clock for the past three mornings. It is much easier to wake up early when it is light out than when it is still dark. I'm glad I am starting this project in the summer. I have needed a nice shower every morning to convince myself that I really want to wake up, but this plan has worked so far.

After three days of waking up at 6a.m. I have found time to do my Bible Study and eat breakfast and still start work by 7a.m. It doesn't sound like a whole lot, but it is the equivalent of 5 extra hours per work week. On top of that, by waking up earlier, I am finding myself more motivated to work harder throughout the day. This has been my most productive week in a long time. I have been able to think more clearly and focus on what needs to be done. I'm not saying that waking up is the magic pill, but I think I have found the magic beans--self discipline. Now to make it a habit.
